While writing this memoir of my growing up years on the Powder River in south eastern Montana, from 1948 to 1958, the many facets of those years have once again sprung to life and memory - my home, my parents, Uncle Fred and Granddad, my friends, my horse Misty, my many pets, our ranch, the store and Post Office, the party line, the school house and outhouse, my teachers, the neighbors rich and poor, weather, dances and parties, lost travelers, hard work and un-abandoned play, books read by lamplight, hazards and heart breaks, hills to climb, a river as companion, and the supreme joy of being a child in that incomparable time and place. I would trade that early life for no other. Love and optimism, courage and acceptance, endurance and the simple freedom to be. A blessed beginning.
