Read It and Grow

My Life Between the Cross and the Bars is not just a book about federal prison ministry, but it is a marvelous chronicle of the inspirational life of Chaplain George Castillo. His gentle storytelling technique illuminates his generous spirit even when he tells of events with sad and tragic outcomes. This is an uplifting book that I found hard to put down. In fact, I finished it during an eleven-hour flight from Lisbon to New York and hungered for more stories from this gifted writer. Castillo hits every emotional chord in this autobiography---read it and grow.

Must reading for anyone involved with inmate rehabilitation

Although written by a Chaplain, George Castillo does not overwhelm his readers with fire and brimstone. Instead, he simply, but powerfully demonstrates exceptional qualities and principles to live by. By no means does he play life safe. The lessons learned through George's trials and tribulations working within the prison system, are valuable to those of us volunteering and working to help inmates become productive members of society. I plan to use an excerpt from this book for the upcoming book, "Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul." For someone who was once labeled as "untrainable," through this excellent work and his extraordinary life, George certainly proved that label wrong. This book is highly informative and interesting. I highly recommended it.
