My Jolly Sailor Bold: A Cornish Telling
A love carried by the sea. A story carried by time.
Boscastle, Cornwall, 1838.
Maria Penrose is the daughter of a prosperous merchant, born into a life of comfort, expectation and a future that has already been decided for her.
William Tregarth is a working sailor with little money, stubborn pride and a life measured in tides, departures and the uncertain promise of coming home.
When their worlds collide on the quay at Boscastle, neither expects what follows.
What begins with ruined good linen, sharp words and an infuriating sailor slowly becomes something neither Maria's family nor William himself can easily dismiss. Between voyages, harbour walks, stolen moments and painful farewells, Maria discovers that loving a sailor means learning to wait-and William discovers there may finally be something ashore worth returning to.
But the sea has always demanded its price.
When William sails from Boscastle once more, Maria gives him a small silver anchor and three simple words:
Bring it home.
This time, the familiar pattern of departure and return is broken.
Years pass. Memories become stories. Stories become songs. Details change, names travel, and a private love affair begins to belong to people who never knew either of them.
And generations later, aboard a fishing boat off the Cornish coast, an old sailor begins telling a young crewman the story behind an old song...
My Jolly Sailor Bold: A Cornish Telling is an atmospheric historical love story of class, family, courage, grief and the strange way ordinary lives become legend. Set against the working harbour, cliffs and sea of Boscastle, it imagines the human story that might have existed behind the traditional ballad-and asks what remains when history forgets almost everything except a song.
