The slam dunk stealers are dirty cobs

I've known Chuck Randall for 48 years and the man is a model for decency and honesty. When I saw his book come out I knew it was a must read. I'm the 3rd son of Bill Tomaras, Chuck's Athletic Director at WWSU. Chuck was a daily part of my life for over 10 years. It is safe to say that I could have added a few chapters of stories, like the Indian basket weaving trick. If half the world were like Chuck Randall, evil would not stand a chance and world peace would be a reality. He lead by example and instilled moral character and self worth in everyone that got to know him and he tried his darnest to meet everyone. Chuck's mind was like an idea machine. There were so many times his trusting nature was taken advantage of. He believed in people regardless of their past. It is one of the traits that made Chuck Randall a great coach. If someone did not play fair, they were a "Dirty Cobb." That's about as strong as it got. Even if you are NOT thinking about being a coach, Chuck Randall is a great study on moral character. It shows all of us that there is room to improve on being a human being. Thanks Chuck for being an example that I grew up with and thanks for all the nice comments on Dad. This book should be a movie also. Randy Tomaras

Story of Chuck Randall

My Impossible Dream is a very nice story about an even nicer man. Coach Randall's accomplishments in basketball are nothing compared to the impact he had on those he coached. His honesty, his integrity, and his love for those boys and men he coached are his true legacy. If you are not a basketball fan, you will still enjoy the story of the coach's life. If you love basketball, you will relish the story of his ups and downs with the places and people he coached. The author introduces the reader to the family, friends, and players of Coach Randall with stories, photos, letters, and even lists of players for the real basketball fans. The story of how the coach was cheated out of the royalties for his slam-dunk rim invention is sad, but Mr. Randall's real treasures are being stored up in heaven for him. We need more coaches like Chuck Randall in sports today.

`My life story isn't all that extraordinary ..'

This is the story of Chuck Randall, a Hall of Fame basketball Coach and the inventor of the slam-dunk rim that changed the sport of basketball. This is also the story of an unassuming and decent man who has had a positive impact on many people he has met during his life's journey. This is the story of a man who has made a difference in his chosen sport by applying his own life principles to coaching. Coach Randall's `no smoking, no drinking policy' was entirely consistent with his own values and set clear boundaries for his players. Because of this policy, Coach Randall believed that his coaching aspirations would be limited to a high school or college environment. I think he regarded this as a boundary rather than a barrier and within this environment Coach Randall's respect for his players and the team spirit engendered is clear. I imagine that the principles and values of team play extended well beyond basketball, and assisted many players in their lives outside basketball. While this book will perhaps be of more interest to basketball fans and those interested in team sport at the school level, this story has a far broader appeal as an exemplar for `making a difference'. Mr Randall is now aged in his eighties, and this book is his story as told to Barbara Kindness. Jennifer Cameron-Smith

Especially recommended for true fans of the sport

My Impossible Dream is the true-life story of Hall of Fame basketball coach and inventor of the slam-dunk rim, Chuck Randall. Though Randall was scammed out of the royalties for his enormously popular invention, the true legacy of his lifetime is his dedication to coaching. His no smoking, no drinking policy among his players reflected his unswerving principles - at a price, since because of this policy he knew he would be unable to coach outside of a high school or college team. My Impossible Dream is the story of a man who lived to do what he loved, and leaves no regrets, having seen his "impossible dream" come true not just once, but again and again. A touching yet lively memoir packed with exciting basketball coaching and gameplay anecdotes, My Impossible Dream is especially recommended for true fans of the sport.

Don't have to be a basketball fan to love this book!

What makes this book so great is its appeal to anyone who has an appreciation of small town sports and attending the local high school basketball games during the cold winter months and even finding ones small town team has made the state play offs. And Chapter 13 The Slam Dunk which is about how how Chuck Randall invented the break away basketball hoop which we all know of from watching basketball game. Its sad that he was cheated out of the monies owed him. But it also serves as an excellent example of why when choosing a lawyer one needs to make sure they are legit and financially sound. But its the story of Mr. Randall's life and the challenges he faced and the positive attitude he has had in his life that is a must read these days. One doesn't have to be a basketball fan to like this book.
