My Garden is a Square

By Barbara Schindelhauer and Mark Hansen

My Garden is a Square provides young children with a playful and accessible introduction to the world of mathematics. Designed to be read and re-read, this book invites 3 to 7 year olds into the magical world of Numberland, where the numbers 0-10 come to life as friendly neighbours, each with their own house and geometrically shaped garden. What can we spot? What is happening - or might happen? And which little rascal is causing mischief from time to time?

Through playful rhymes, colourful illustrations and curious questions, children are encouraged to notice, wonder, count, compare and talk about mathematics. Along the way, they explore numbers, quantities, shapes, patterns, part-whole relationships, and the concepts of one more and one fewer - making connections and developing strong early number sense.

NEW IN THIS EDITION

This edition includes a range of additional resources to help families and educators extend the learning beyond the story and into real life:

- Background information about the development of quantity and number understanding
- Practical tips and ideas for working with the book, also available as a downloadable PDF
- Colouring pages within the book and as additional downloadable resources
- A downloadable cut-out and craft Numbertown, featuring all the Numberland characters
- A font designed to support early readers

My Garden is a Square works beautifully as a standalone introduction to early mathematics or as a vehicle for further exploring and extending the Let's Visit Numberland approach. By bringing Numberland into the home or classroom, the characters, stories and mathematical ideas become a springboard for hands-on experiences, conversations and playful investigations.

By helping children connect the mathematics in Numberland with the mathematics all around them, My Garden is a Square makes abstract mathematical ideas visible, meaningful and fun.
