My Favorite Things: Poems

By Tomás Q. Morín

The exuberant follow-up to the poet's first novel, My Favorite Things is his fourth collection of poems: a book celebrating love, music, moonlight, and the joy of our finding the words for them

" Morin's] writing cuts to the core with electrifying force . . . A promising and powerful new voice in American poetry." --The Free Lance-Star

Opening with a playful homage to the classic song "My Favorite Things" (the poet's lines don't include Julie Andrews singing it, but do include "Kittens with rayguns and novels with laughs / Saunas with windows and cakes by the half"), these poems know that time does us no favors, that to love is to laugh in the face of a world that crushes hearts. From the hilarious "Kale Gaze" to the mysterious "Tons" ("one hundred million / feathers / that weigh the same / as love"), these poems reveal that it is our words that shape our happiness and allow us to give our secret, dreaming selves to the ones we love.

In four sections, mirroring the four tracks on Coltrane's famous record by the same name, Mor n's lyrics soar from ducks to lime trees to "the white mountains/ of Pluto." Whether he's considering a lunar halo or the melancholy strings of Ella Fitzgerald's "But Not for Me," these are all love poems. The unabashed delight and magnetism of that love on the page makes this a collection, Mor n's stellar best, for all time and all readers.
