Living With Hope

My Favorite American is a powerful story of a courageous young woman whose path in life has been an inspiration to many in the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) community. Dennis McCloskey's biography of Valen Cover will not disappoint anyone. You will laugh and at times, you will cry while reading this account of one family dealing with more issues than most face in their lifetime. The Covers are very forthcoming in recounting their innermost details during these darkest periods in their child's life. All of these "stepping stones", tragic as they may be, have molded Valen Cover into a vibrant, compassionate and beautiful woman who is wise beyond her youthful age of 25 (believe me, I can attest to that fact because at 54, I have to think I've earned that insight into evaluating one's maturity level). The term "stepping stones" is not meant to minimize the ordeals that she has encountered. Valen happened to be given a rock climbing expedition, an upgrade from the normal "stepping stones" and even during occasional "falling rocks"; Valen climbed her mountain victoriously. I believe that we all go through life with our own set of stepping stones and how we choose to manage them, determines who we become. As mentioned earlier, she represents HOPE to those of us living with PKD; but the truth is, those outside the PKD world could benefit from this story which was so beautifully brought to life by an author who couldn't help but see in Valen....one of "my favorite Americans".

Uplifting story written with humour and compassion

What a wonderful story. I was captured from the first pages and found it very difficult to put this book down. The author transports you into the lives of a family struggling with disease and illness and yet time and again you feel hope and healing from this true American family. An amazing story about a young girl who never gave up and the family that loved her through unimaginable pain. I hope each person who reads this true story will be thankful for LIFE and know that each day is precious and having loving parents is a true gift......AND that Valen is definitely NOT your average girl.

Hope & Faith

What an inspirational book! The author did a fabulous job capturing this family as they went through so much pain & turmoil. One has only to see the spirit of this courageous girl, who never gave up. She has emerged as a beautiful person, who continues to give hope to all who know her. Our family is riddled with PKD & it is Valen who gives us hope for that cure!!

A true story of hope, healing, faith, healing, and friendship

This true story can help to inspire and uplift anyone! It toches so many facits of the human condition that I cannot fathom anyone who would not be moved by it's messages. From the family's struggle with the choice of bringing a child with an incurable disease (PKD)into the world to her resolve and tireless efforts to find a cure this book is a showcase for the strength of positive attitude. The story is told with humor and sensitivity in a way that does not let you put it down! From the prolouge to the final puncuation this story will not dissapoint!
