Midcentury was a time when smoking, cocktails and road trips were the height of glamour. Prosperity fueled cars, bold new design, and the breakdown of social convention. Romance reigned! My parents enthusiastically followed all the midcentury trends, including that of the adulterous husband/passive wife (while attending church every Sunday), and the building of an atomic rancher in the suburbs of Knoxville. My family might have looked hip and happy but the truth was far from it. With our House as the backdrop, I detail anecdotes both funny and poignant of my parents' histories, values, and behavior--which led me to hate my father--and my resulting angst, romantic obsession, and immorality. All of which influenced my marriage choice. In spite of my best efforts to change the family track, failures were repeated. But Divine intervention never fails.
