I love trees. The more ancient, the better, especially the ones that look arthritic, like the old conker tree I stand beside, waiting for a lift, contemplating my life. There were many people in those early days. My passionate mother, full of stories from her wartime childhood, told me the world was my oyster, and I believed her. Then there were those I met in Egypt. A Canadian girl in a cockroach-infested flat, an American friend with a tale to spin, and an artist perched high on a ladder. All women. All of us running towards excitement and adventure. This was 1987. No mobile phones, no internet, no easy way home. We never worried about what lay around the next corner. We couldn't wait to turn it.
