My Buffalo Soldier

Reeves, Barbara B.K. MY BUFFALO SOLDIER. Columbus, Mississippi: Genesis Press, Inc. 2000. 265 p. Paperback: $8.95. ISBN 1-58571-013-XMy Buffalo Soldier is a compelling story of an impossible love between a man and a woman. In 1871 when Nick Balfours feels an attraction to Enid Jamison, he knows he must ignore it. Even a century later the love between a black man and a white woman will be barely tolerated.Fighting his heart Nick refuses to allow Enid to teach in a black school at Fort Clark. "A white teacher, young and delectable, beautiful and blonde, standing up before all those horny black soldiers" was unthinkable. When Enid's racist brother, Paul, discovers she is teaching ignorant black soldiers, he threatens to confine her to an asylum. Enid recognizes her own attraction to Nick. Both struggle to hide their longings for each other. Nick attempts to save them both from the many opposing villians, knowing he has no business wanting a white woman. Just when true love seems to have conquered all, Enid's brother brings his gang of cutthroats to wreak vengence on those who would love enough to defy customs. The prejudice and bigotry of the Reconstruction South almost defeat the love of a black Buffalo soldier for a white Confederate widow. B.K. Reeves writes western, science fiction, contemporary, and historical novels. She teaches novel and short story at San Jacinto College. My Buffalo Soldier is BK's sixth published novel.

My Buffalo Soldier Sizzles with Passion and Action

My Buffalo Soldier was a great read -- fast-paced, romantic and action-packed. I very much enjoyed the "courtship" between the two main characters. Because of society's stigma they did their best to control how they felt about each other, but the passion finally broke through. As a reader I was rooting for them all the way. I also thought the author did a stellar job of balancing the social problems with the romance; the weaving of the two conflicts made for a non-stop plot. The story is full of characters that are well-rounded and interesting. Set in post-Civil War Texas, the book was well-researched and gave the reader a real flavor for life . . . and death . . . in the 1870's. To the author, thank you for not wimping out at the end. The action and romance kept me glued to the book to the last page. All I can say is, "any chance for a sequel?" Hats off to the publisher and the author for having the guts to tell this story. I highly recommend this read.

AN EXCELLENT LOVE STORY THAT BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE

My Buffalo Soldier is a gripping story of love that must over come racial barriers in post civil war Texas to survive. History comes to life against beautiful backdrops in West Texas and Mexico as you become acquainted with the struggles faced by a changing nation. The war may be over but the battle for equality has just begun.A Buffalo Soldier well acquainted with prejudice and hatred, Nick struggles to deny his love for the beautiful white woman who claims his heart. Enid's fight for freedom pits her against her domineering brother and a society that allows him to dictate her every move. But Enid's hardest fought battle is against Nick, the man she loves, who denies his feelings for her in an effort to protect her from the hatred their love will bring into her life.An excellent story you will not want to put down from the first page until the very satisfying conculsion, I highly recommend this book!

Western romance

My Buffalo Soldier is a well-researched western romance spotlighting the many racial and ethnic groups that contributed to the growth of our country. The forbidden romance between Nick, the buffalo soldier, and Enid, the white southern widow, is central to the story, but we also see Mexican, Indian, and frontier culture. My Buffalo Soldier combines romance with western adventure and Texas history. It is also a fine introduction to the Genesis Press Love Spectrum romance line.

Gripping story

Barbara Reeves really outdoes herself in this gripping story of Nick, an artistic Buffalo soldier who is determined not to let himself fall in love with the pretty, blonde school marm who teaches his uneducated black soldiers to read and write. Action and suspense will hold you enthralled when her brother decides this interracial romance must not continue and he is willing to kill to prevent it. You'll fall in love with Little Bear, the five year old boy who is determined to help Nick succeed in romancing his true love. Don't miss this book!
