This is an excellent set of hardcover children's books (12 volumes plus a Parents Guide, although the number of volumes in the set varied in the early years). It was published from the 1920's into the 1970's. It is an inspired work of American children's educational literature, conceived, thoughtfully edited, and very gradually revised over decades by Olive Beaupre Miller. The 12 volumes are graded to inform and appeal to children from infant to teen with rhymes, fables, folk tales, biographies, brief travelogues, and snippets of history. The content reflects the cultural perspectives of its time, and in that context reflects the highest educational standards. It has added appeal now as a window through which adults can view the world as seen by mid-twentieth century middle to upper class America
