Book Overview

How long does true love last? It's a question author Alan Shope attempts to answer in his second novel "My Attrition".

Fiction Drama, inspired by real writings.

Brought together by fate, George Stone, a young American soldier and an English girl, Eve Wild, find more than just love in a quiet mountain cabin surrounded by enemy soldiers in World War II France. After a mission goes terribly wrong, young American soldier George Stone is caught behind enemy lines all alone. Forced to survive without food and water in bone chilling temperatures, Stone surprisingly discovers an ally surviving in the same place for many different reasons. The two build a friendship and an eventual love that no army could ever tear apart. But can that love survive time and distance? Their love is finally revealed when hidden letters are discovered in a Kansas farmhouse attic years later by the soldier's son.

"My Attrition" is the follow up to Alan Shope's first published title "A Different Heaven" iUniverse 2005 ISBN 0595341101.

Great Read!

This is a great book and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I am a big WWII buff and this book had it all - the action, the love story, and the suprise ending. I highly recommend reading this book (you will not be disappointed).

In the Mountains

In recommending this book to everyone, you must know it is hard to find a stopping point to put the book down. This book is also a great gift to give someone who loves to read. While reading the book, I found myself getting into the book by picturing the settings of each part. I don't really like reading about war stories but this book is different. With two best friends from childhood going to war together, what bravery for one to do for the other friend. Reading through the book, I had questions such as: what connection Richard had in the story; would George be found by the enemy; and much later, I could not figure out how George and Eve were getting their letters back and forth to each other. All I had to do was be patient and read on. What a surprise and a happy one, when the author answered about the letters getting back & forth. I enjoyed reading about Richard but I was more interested in George and 'the cabin'. What an amazing friendship that George and Eve had that brings their love for each other together. I kept hoping George wouldn't be found by the enemy but if or when he might be, I hoped he wouldn't be killed. The next time George saw Eve, I was 'so' disappointed in the outcome. How fitting to end the story at 'the cabin' and 'Stone Chapel'. Then down the mountain of our Kansas Hero and his love! Margaret Oyler Wichita, Kansas

My Attrition

My Attrition" is a must summer read for romantics and World War II era buffs. Based on true love letters found stored away in an old attic; where the story develops between two lovers, Eve Wild and George Stone. The manner in which the author was telling the story through vivid descriptive imagery, bouncing from the past and present, I felt like I was a part of their lives. I experienced the intense trauma that George felt when his parachute line was cut from the World War II plane; to save his life, over the French country as he watched in horror when the plane, with the passenger of his best friend since child birth, go up in flames after enemy fire hit it. I felt the pain of Eve through her letters not being able to tell George of his child she was bearing or to be with him and have their family. The author captured the charm and beauty of life in a small Kansas town, down to the golden blossoms of Kansas' Indian summers. The surprise ending and feeling of lost love, not to mention the emotions of the author, secretly intertwined, around the two main characters, Eve and George was sheer brilliance. You need to read this for the hidden story with in the story. Eve is a strong character and her love for George surpasses through decades and international boundaries. I was so angry at George that I was screaming aloud. When he didn't tell Eve that he was back after an 8 yr. ban from France to rebuild after the war, all because he said he didn't want to "ruin" her new life. Bull! He was afraid that she did start a new life without him when he saw her smiling and kissing the Priest at the church, as if she hadn't missed George at all, and was afraid she would reject him and that her love has waned over time. This book is awesome I couldn't put it down once I started to read it; I plowed through it in one sitting, reading until 2 am. I have since read it three times. Lost love but still clinging to some remnant over a life time is something most of us have done. I can't wait to for the author's next book.

A Different Kind of Book

I really enjoyed this book because I like things that are different. This book is definitley not the same ole read! It seems to evolve into three or four different books, or maybe book types is a more accurate description, which really keeps your attention and makes you feel so glad for having the experience once you've reached the end. It starts off being historical. You get to know the main character during WWII. Then it turns into a romance, but thankfully not a sappy one. There are parts where you have to stop and think to try to figure out the underlying meanings of things, like in a mysery or thriller. And by the end, you have learned a life lesson, as if this were a self-help book. Try it, you'll like it! No, you'll love it!
