This book makes the test appear harder than it really is!

I read the other comments about being people being overwhelmed by this test. I will say this: after comparing notes with my friends, all of whom took different versions of the Music Praxis, there are many things that repeat on all of the tests for music. They will always ask you to do the following: classify voice parts and timbre, know composition styles of all the time periods, play world music and ask you to identify the region and/or country the piece is from, be able to transpose for band and orchestra instruments, know the notes that correspond with the slide positions on the trombone and the valve positions on the trumpet, know how to conduct in odd meters such as 5/4, know instrument ranges i.e. piccolo, be able to identify upon hearing jazz singers and jazz soloists, be able to identify 20th century composers such as Shoenbern, Webern, and Glass (in addition to your basic Baroque, Romantic, and Classical composers), know cadences, be able to find pitch and rhythmic errors in a score, know ALL of your tempo markings and tempo change markings, know your written and aural intervals, and know your music education methods like Orff, Dalcroze, Gordon, and Kodaly. Every single test, no matter what, has the above questions on it.

Didn't use the book

I ended up passing the Music Praxis test with flying colors without using the book. However, I did skim through it, and it looks like it would be great for anyone wanting an edge for the Music Praxis.

Useful, but not the only tool you will need.

This book is wonderful for its' many lists of subjects to study, though you should be forwarned that the list is VERY extensive, and for me it was somewhat intimidating. I timed myself using the tests only after much studying so that I could see exactly how well I was doing and what I needed to brush up on the week before the test. (Just wish there were more practice tests!) There is also some really good general advice regarding taking the test. That said, you will need to review your music history, theory, and music ed. materials before taking the test. I found that Music Appreciation books were great for music history review. I guess my best bit of information regarding the success for this book is that even though standardized tests and I generally do not get along, I PASSED ON THE FIRST TRY with plenty of points to spare. Best of luck!!
