Book Overview

LASSIE, GO HOME -- MUSH IS HERE Now that Kelly Mangiaro's family has moved out of their apartment into a house, she figures her parents will finally let her get a dog. Instead, her mother gets a job, and Kelly gets a baby-sitter. Then Kelly comes upon Mush, a mushamute -- a breed not recognized by the Westminster Kennel Club, or by anyone else for that matter, possibly because mushamutes come from the planet Growf-Woof-Woof, in the solar system of Arfturus. Mushamutes can talk, tell time, cook up a storm, and even clean up the kitchen afterwards. Who needs a baby-sitter when there's a mushamute around? Now if only Kelly can persuade her parents to let her keep Mush....

Good, goofy Pinkwater fun

"Mush, A Dog From Outer Space" Written by Daniel Pinkwater Illustrated by Jill Pinkwater (Simon & Schuster, 1995) ------------------------------------------ Another glib, goofy, fun-to-read super-silly book from Daniel Pinkwater. This is the first (of two) (so far) books about Mush, the mushamute dog from outer space, a girl dog who talks, has her own spaceship and is a great cooking instructor. We also meet Kelly Mangiaro, the Earth human who brings mush home -- Kelly is an especially appealing Pinkwater character, whose own story is one of the more interesting character profiles in a Pinkwater book (mostly I think I like having a female protagonist... well, two of them, actually. Nice change of pace.) This first book mostly deals with Kelly and Mush meeting and adopting one another, and Kelly finagling things so that her parents will let her keep the dog. All, of course, draped in Pinkwater's trademark goofy-silly narrative style. A good, quick read that will leave you wanting more. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

A Great Dog Story

I have been a Daniel Pinkwater fan for 25+ years. He writes for both children and adult. He is definitely an acquired taste, but I guarantee you if you read this book it will leave a smile on your face

Good for preschoolers, too.

My daughter (who just turned four) picked this out at the library. We've enjoyed reading this clever story many, many times and I particularly like the fact that both Kelly and Mush, the two main characters, are both female. This is a great beginning chapter book for a bright preschooler - - uncomplicated and charming but droll enough to keep parent readers happy too.

Excellent.

My favorite part was when the girl (Kelly) found out that Mush was a dog from space. Noa

A very funny, entertaining book for 7 to 12 -year olds

About a really funny dog from outer space who can talk to people and other animals. This dog is really smart and it prefers to eat food that humans would eat, especially roast duck with all the fixings. It made me laugh a lot.
