Museums in Crisis

In the present volume, an attempt is made to deal with the relationship between art and society today in one of its most important aspects - the museum. Critical examinations of the museum's past, present, and future range over such problems as a mass audience and democratic objectives; the functions of the director, curator and trustees; the museums relationship to the university and education, and its role in defining art. The contributors are well known British and American art critics and historians - people involved professionally with the very institutionsa they are criticixing: John E. Bowlt, Edward F. Fry, Grace Glueck, Ernest van den Haag, Hugh Kenner, Max Kozloff, Thomas W. Leavitt, Linda Nochlin, John R. Spencer, and Bryan Robertson. --- excerpt from book's dustjacket
