Teddy Abbott and Joe Camden, sons of sharecroppers, struggle to make a life in the Arkansas Mississippi River Delta in 1943. The boys' lives change dramatically when Joe's cousin, Garfield Camden, an albino U.S. Army deserter from the 82d Airborne, walks into the Horse Island community, on a mission from God. The local preacher and moonshiner, Roscoe Gilmore, takes Garfield under his wing in a bungled attempt to teach him the finer points of conducting a ministry in the wilderness.
