With the country's highest number of Covid deaths, the northern city of Liverpool is the first place in England to enter Tier Three Lockdown. The historically vibrant city is now a ghost town.

Thirty-nine year old Luke Sharkey, the city's leading property developer, is admitted to hospital. After three days on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of the Royal Liverpool Hospital, he dies. Doctors certify death with Covid.

Present at the hospital when Sharkey died, Liverpool Post crime reporter Sanjay Singh is convinced he's been murdered. He persuades his old school friend Detective Inspector Steve Whittley to dig deeper, together with Jane Wilson, Merseyside Police's IT whizz.

As they search for the real cause of death, they unravel a complex mesh of corruption and collusion involving the City's long-standing Mayor, Chinese property investment funds and specialist offshore bankers and lawyers.

Their labyrinthine trail takes them from Liverpool to London, and from Beijing to Panama.
