There are fourteen short stories in this paperback that all have in one way or another to do with murder, deception, suspicion, fear, hatred, sex and many other nasty vices of human nature. Of course, some are better than others, but there are some really good stories that I recommend like "For Every Evil," "Murder Door to Door," and An Element of Risk." Actually these three stories in particular all deal with murder from a psychological point of view and kept me busily tearing through them. I did especially like one story in particular which seems to be an archetype for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Including an introduction from Sir Alfred himself, the book consists of the following stories with authors (and copyright): "The Sawbuck Machine" by Frank Sisk (1966) "Contraband" by James Holding (1964) "For Every Evil" by Douglas Farr (1959) "You Can't Win 'Em (At) All" by Ed Lacy (1967) "Murder in Mind" by C. B. Gilford (1971) "Charley's Charm" by Alice-Mary Schnirring (1972) "Murder Door to Door" by Robert Colby (1972) "Ransom Demand" by Jeffrey M. Wallman (1972) "I'll Race You" by Fletcher Flora (1969) "I Am Not A Thief, Mr, Kester" by Gilbert Ralston (1961) "Mousetrap" by Edwin P. Hicks (1968) "Mildly Murderous" by Elijah Ellis (1966) "An Element of Risk" by Richard Deming (1972) "A Neighborly Observation" by Richard Hardwick (1971)
