Tale of Intrigue in the Early 18th Century

M.E. Kemp's tale of intrigue, "Murder, Mather and Mayhem," unravels the mystery of "who's murdering the ministers of Massachusetts Bay?" Along the way you meet, and get to know, many wonderful characters, including "Creasy" Cotton, Grammar Pisspot and, my favorite, Hetty Henry. Hetty is a clever, lusty, rich and independent widow. I think all feminists, young and old, will love her. She loves and appreciates men (when they deserve it), but definitely doesn't "need" them to feel complete. A delightful book that I highly recommend.

Hetty Henry Rocks!

This new and different historical period provides an unusual backdrop to Hetty's story. Hetty is a spunky woman, independent, smart, in fact, smarter by far than her male counterparts. Priscilla, her companion pig, also shows great porcine intelligence. They set about solving the murders of the Massachusetts Colony's ministers despite doubts on the part of the male population. If you like historical mysteries with liberal dashes of humor and quirky characters, this book's for you.

A Fun Read

Spunky Hetty Henry, a feminist years ahead of her time, is a resourceful heroine, twice widowed at 25, and not opposed to keeping an eye out for another husband. But first, she wants to find out who's murdering the ministers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and relieve her cousin Cotton Mather's fears that he may be the next victim. Kemp offers a wealth of historical detail and paints a rich picture of Colonial New England but keeps her touch light and her characters appealing. She blends murder, religion and mysticism, stirs in a few hexes and spells and adds enough romance to keep readers engrossed. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a colorful whodunit and, as a former high school librarian, to other librarians looking for accurate and entertaining reading for adults and l0-12th grade American History students.

Kemp is adept at bringing a historical period to life! This mystery kept me engaged, amused, and engrossed throughout. Terrific choice for young adults, too. Good buy!
