Retired DCI Jeff Cleveland hasn't served as a policeman for fifteen years. In that time, the country has changed immeasurably.
A series of natural climatic disasters have ravaged Planet Earth, and the people of the UK have had to adapt to survive. The population has been divided into age-related zones controlled by Administrators. Police forces and forensic services have been defunded, and all crime-related records have been purged to free up computer space. The internet has been shut down.
When Jeff agrees to investigate the murder of a prominent figure, whose body has already been cremated, he begins to question whether he has bitten off more than he can chew. His task is not made easier because of travel restrictions, mistrust of ex-police officers, and corruption.
