Murder in the Margins: A Cormorant Cove Bookshop Mystery
o Calloway came to Cormorant Cove to sell her late aunt's failing bookshop and go home. She didn't plan on inheriting a one-eyed cat, a town full of secrets, or a body in the storeroom.
Wendell Pruitt was the richest, most hated man on the Maine coast - and the last thing he did before someone bludgeoned him with a bronze bookend was threaten to sue Jo over a book her aunt supposedly stole forty-five years ago. Half the town watched them argue hours before he died. Jo's fingerprints are on the murder weapon. And the local police chief, however kind, can only protect her from suspicion for so long.
So Jo does what she does best: she starts reading the paper trail nobody else bothered to open. A rival bookseller with an old grudge. A disinherited son who inherited everything the moment his father died. A young widow with a will that changed weeks before the murder. And a four-decades-old ledger entry, scratched out so thoroughly someone clearly hoped it would never be read again.
Every answer she finds only deepens the one she's not ready for: that the real mystery was never about money at all - it was about a stolen legacy, a family's erased history, and exactly how far someone will go to finally collect a debt the world forgot was owed.
Murder in the Margins is a warm, whip-smart start to a new cozy mystery series - a shop cat with opinions, a slow-simmer spark with the local police chief, a lobster-festival town that keeps its secrets close, and a puzzle that plays fair with the reader right up to its last page.
Perfect for readers who love Louise Penny's small-town warmth, the found-community charm of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club, and any mystery where the bookshop is as much a character as the sleuth.
