A SAMPLE FROM THE BOOK:((c) 2023 Greg Kerr)
"Mommy, mommy Can I see Santa?" shouted a little four-year-old girl to her mother when the mega mall theme park opened on Black Friday morning.
As they walked briskly into the towering dome on the western flank of a gigantic park, the mother started to go into a clothing shop. But the little girl kept pulling her arm and crying, "I want to see Santa "
"Mommy has to do a little Christmas shopping first," said the mother. But with the child practically throwing a tantrum, the mother relented and they began looking for Santa's village.
"There he is," the girl pointed. Across the atrium, the shopping mall's Santa Claus was sitting down on a big golden throne, surrounded by eight "helpers." Some were elves, dressed mostly in green, and others were just Santa's regular North Pole assistants, his deputies, dressed in red velvet outfits with white furry fringes. Soft Christmas melodies were wafting through the air.
The little girl broke away from her mother's hand, and dashed towards the Santa outpost. But as she veered around the Christmas tree, a beautifully decorated 30-foot high Fraser fir, she tripped over something sticking out from under its branches.
"Stop running " the mother shouted.
The little girl picked herself up, dusted herself off, and replied, "I'm okay, mommy."
She turned around to see what she had tripped over.
And screamed.
It was a high-pitched bloodcurdling shriek that rang out through the building, echoing through the rafters, like someone falling over a cliff. Loud enough so that everyone within a hundred yards spun around to see what was happening.
The little girl was standing next to the dead body of Frank Ballard, one of the night security guards.
