Book Overview

Murder at Whalehead is the ultimate beach read. On the northern Outer Banks looms an old hunting lodge known as the Whalehead Club. During the roaring twenties Edward and Marie Knight entertained guests at this isolated Mansion by the Sea. Now it has become one of North Carolina's most popular tourist attractions. Less than a quarter mile away deep in the marsh along the Currituck Sound lies the body of a young woman. Someone has killed and craves...

It Made Me Smile

As I read this book, I caught myself smiling many times. My first visit to the Outer Banks was in June of 2006 and it was there that I met a wonderful family from Ohio. The characters in this book reminded me of that family and I hope our paths cross in Corolla, NC again soon. The book is very well written. Joe Ellis knows how to capture the reader's attention from the very beginning and he holds onto it as he takes you on a roller coaster ride of suspense, plot twists and contemplative insights into human nature itself. His "religious" commentary reminded me even more of that special Ohio family. They too seemed to understand that God is truly in control.

Believable characters

I don't know about you, but I have noticed that all the characters in this book remind me of someone I know. I love books that reveal really believable characters.

Murder at Whalehead ~ A Superb Novel!

For anyone who has visited the Outerbanks, this novel is an excellent read I highly recommend. The descriptive parts of the Corolla, Currituck Sound and beach areas are outstanding in their portrayal and well done, transporting the reader right into the heart of the novel. You can almost feel the ocean breeze blowing and feel the warmth of the sun on your face. It made me long for our annual family summer vacations in that spot. The characters were thoughtfully created with much attention to detail and come from all walks of life and different perspectives. The conflict was sharply drawn between the protagonistic and antagonistic characters. You could feel the dramatic tension building between the two opposing forces as the story unfolds before the reader, pursuing the question: Who is the true villain(s) in this piece? The reader will be engrossed in their reading to the very ending which is filled with suspense and unpredictable twists and turns along the way! Joe Ellis is a seasoned Ohio Valley writer, and this novel expresses his tremendous literary growth as an author. I look forward to reading his future endeavors in the fields of fiction and nonfiction.

One of my favorites - Gretchen Snodgrass, St. Clairsville, Ohio

I've read this book twice, and I just love it!!!!! The characters are very believable. I wanted to be on vacation with them, even if there was a killer on the loose. The vacation spot was descibed so well I could visualize it perfectly. I loved the wild horses. I liked that the characters pondered the big questions: right/wrong, good/evil, etc. I read a lot of books, and this is one of my favorites. It's action-packed, thrilling, and true-to-life. I'd recommend it to anyone! Gretchen Snodgrass

Great Summer Read

I LOVED this book. From the moment I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. I was transported down to the Outer Banks and went along on the adventure as the two families in the novel explored new places, opened themselves up to new ideas, and helped solve a murder. This book is very well written and I highly recommend it!
