There are a million stories in Del Webb Sun Cities nationwide about retirees who lived well and ended well. But these "active adult" communities are premised on the denial of certain realities, especially the reality of aging when 70% of people over 65 will need long term care including help with daily activities, not covered by standard HMOs. Medicare, and Medigap, and not included in HOA fees. And then there's the denial of the realty of death, despite that death eventually happens to everyone, everywhere.

HOA fees bought peace of mind that crimes of violence were safely "outside" Sun City's Main Gate and high walls guarded by surveillance cameras and an unarmed community patrol, while residents and "snowbird" visitors live the good life that Del Webb envisioned and promoted. And yet Murder and "unnatural" deaths have been breaching the Gate, scaling the walls unnoticed, and showing up on Sun Citians' doorsteps. These are their stories.
