When Alice Hayrigg's husband Brayden is found dead at the kitchen table with a carving knife in his heart, and Alice is nowhere to be found, it seems an open and shut case. But there are too many people prepared to swear that Alice would never do anything like that. As the case drags on, Penny and her team have to admit they are completely stumped.

At least her love life is looking up, but when Penny and her sister Ellie see what Maric is going to drive her to the Vagabond Restaurant in, they are left speechless.

In the meantime, Maric leads a Lightning team against a lawless paramilitary group that has set up in an area backing onto a national park, and Penny has to decide if she can live with him putting his life on the line like that.
