Warrant Officer Jake Hannon is assigned by the Army Criminal Investigation Division to find the killer. Hannon meets Yar Nagloc, whose wife and daughter have been snatched by the Nazis and taken from their homeland. Nagloc, dubbed "The Ghost of Normandy" for his role as the perpetrator of a one-man guerilla war against the Nazis, joins Hannon in a quest to solve the murders and find his family. The story's climax dovetails with the end of the fighting in Europe on V-E Day. After following the trail of the sadistic slayings as the Allies march across Europe. Hannon closes in on the killer, and Nagloc finds the end of his journey with the discovery of the German concentration camp at Gunskirchen, Austria. Setting the stage throughout the story are a number of historical events, including the Battle of the Bulge, Patton crossing the Rhine River, and the introduction of the first African-American armored unit to fight in Europe, the 761st Tank Battalion.
