A Suspensful and Intriguing Book

Perone has written an exceptionally readable and historically sound novel about a handful of colorful reporters sent to Rome to cover the papal election and the mysterious Cardinals and their aides as they embark on the mystical election process. The characters are particularly interesting. Each character has his or her own history and purpose in Rome, which makes for interesting conflict and resolution among them. In addition, the mental imagery created by the text is remarkable. When the characters engage in dialogue while walking the streets of Rome or Venice, for example, the reader has the sensation of watching a movie in the mind. Lastly, the reader is hooked from the first pages of the book, as Perone drops the reader in the middle of a mystery. Each page literally contains the suspenseful unfolding and creation of mystery, keeping the reader turning pages to learn what has and what will happen until the end.
