The book contains the proceedings of the first Dagstuhl Workshop on Multimedia. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together a small group of multimedia computing researchers who would on one hand identify research issues and agendas and on the other hand report on current research. The material in this book is organized into three sections. The first section contains reports on three subject areas: Authoring Systems, Multimedia Systems Architectures, and Digital Video in Multimedia Systems. The other two sections are collections of related papers. The first one concerns system architecture issues, and focusses on internal system matters such as multimedia databases and networking support for multimedia. The second collection of papers concerns multimedia documents and interfaces.
