This novel is about a Nigerian couple, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo who immigrate to America, after an arranged marriage, to start a family. The dynamic between the couple and their American-born daughter, Adaora is largely dictated by their Nigerian customs and it threatens to destroy their collective and individual dreams of a better life in America. Mrs. Okonkwo, the protagonist, must choose between adhering to her Nigerian customs and remain an outsider or break tradition and assimilate in America in order to survive and for her daughter to thrive.
