warm and winning

Witty and warm little book about a char woman whose dream it is to own a Dior dress. A woman's single-minded love of beauty. Optimistic and heart-warming, but never maudlin. Mr. Gallico has an ear for dialect and a feel for human sentiment, with the words to express it succinctly.

A charming little lady

When Mrs Harris , a London cleaning lady, sets her eyes on a Dior dress for the first time, she knows she just has to have one. No mean feat for someone who earns 3 shillings a day. This story is as charming as she is and tells about the lives she changes on her way to reaching her goal. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Delightfully Charming!

This book was a delight and charming in every way. Made into a TV movie with the lead played by Angela Landsbury. The sweetest story!

Great Fireside single-seating read.

While visiting a 16th century home in Portugal, we found a first edition hardcover of this little book tucked away on a library shelf. Someone bothered to start to read it. By the end of our vacation all 9 of us had read this gem of a fairy tale. A life long memory for us all.
