This is the story of James Field, a man who has raised his daughter, Annie, by himself, a man who loves her extravagantly--and then loses her, seemingly forever, when she elopes with Cole Gilbertson, a handsome young ne'er-do-well.
The plot of this novel deals with the relationship of Mr. Field with his daughter, Annie. It examines their connection and his overwhelming love for her. When Annie was a teen she ran off with a n'eer-do-well. Mr. Field nearly loses his mind and almost permanently alienates Annie by his intense need for her as he seeks to reclaim her. She returns home years later with a daughter of her own. When she plans on remarrying, her ex-husband seeks retribution, blaming Mr. Field for Annie having left him in the first place. While the use of language is lovely, the book occasionally wanders. The ending is very touching
