The cat, Mr. Catsky, is dropped off in the forest, since he is too old to be of any use to the owner. The distressed cat is saved by a fox who does it for her own benefit. She presents the cat to her forest friends and foes as her husband, a vicious beast. The animals cook a dinner for Mr. Catsky and the fox. But they are all nervous and frightened. And something goes terribly wrong at the dinner. Not for the cat. For the animal friends.
Mr. Catsky is one of the most beloved fairy tales from Ukraine. It is both entertaining and educational for both young and young-at-heart. The former learn about friendship, trust, and not to believe everything they hear or see. The latter are taught of critical thinking, decision making, and not to be afraid of inevitable life changes. Sometimes moments are the darkest just before dawn.
The tale is retold by Svitlana B. Jones, Ph.D., the professional translator. And it is illustrated by a young artist from Ukraine, Oksana Pyrozhok.
