Realistic and sensible and encouraging

Moving Up to Millions: The Life Calculator Guide to WealthHaving always been adverse to such works of non-fiction, something about this one caught my eye and my pocketbook. This is not your typical professorial dicta nor is it another infomerical for another program devised for those already endowed with a nice nestegg. Dr. Connell leaves you wanting more as she takes you on a ride through your life in terms of personal finances. The book provides a fresh approach and sage advice backed by a multitude of research for those of us on the skeptical side. She provides real life, real time models in a practical manner in a non-condescending tone. I especially liked the ease with which I was able to understand her message without the necessity of seeking clarification of financial jargon. But the true gem of it all is the free trial of the Life Calculator software that's as easy to navigate as email; yet incredibly thought provoking yielding answers to your input with the click of a mouse!

An interesting and unique read

I bought this book after flipping through it at Barnes and Noble. It's not like the other personal finance books, with their focus on investments and making money. Instead, this book focuses on the downside and protection against LOSING money. The author coins the "Dirty Dozen" adverse events or events such as losing your job, getting a divorce, etc. which have major financial consequences (I never imagined they would cost so much, or have such a high probability of occurring). It's an interesting perspective on personal finance. There are also "profiles" or anecdotal stories in the book that are fun to read, with some tongue-in-cheek humor. Finally, the book offers a 30 day trial of the Life Calculator. I haven't really played it yet, but it looks interesting; much more interesting than the other financial calculators on the web.
