Galen Rowel's photographs astonish but his text is equally grand.

This book is a pleasure to look at and to read. If you have ever been curious about this part of the world Glen Rowel's book will enlighten you in ways most picture books don't. Try it, you will love it.

Classic photos and stories of seldom explored mountains

The Middle kingdom refers to Tibet, and similar surrounding areas that have been closed to foreigners throughout most of recent history. Galen Rowell managed to get permits to access many of these areas, and his photos and stories are astounding. They include a great deal of history, as well as his private adventures and reveal many secret places from an incredible portion of world geography. Dancing on the Edge of an Endangered Planet

Beautiful book that offers a good introduction

to China's mountains and its mountaineering history. The photographs in the book included some of the best from Rowell's portfolio and there's quite a bit of writing on the history and background of the mountains as well as from the Rowell's expedition to the mountains.
