Mother Mom is an incredible memoir of determination and accomplishment despite disability. Esther contracted polio in 1910. Back then there were no handicap parking spots, no ramps, no wheelchairs-these things did not exist for a person with special needs. However, in Esther's mind, she needed no such adaptations. There was never a thought that she couldn't accomplish anything she wanted to so on her own. Her indomitable spirit kept her motivated until she reached each goal. She believed that though she was handicapped, it was her obstacle, not a hindrance to be inflicted on anyone else. She would stand on her own two feet, even though one was paralyzed.
