Three short stories, three tales written at different times, unveiling the chain of events involving men whose lives are stuck in routine and cohabit with a sense of incompleteness. It is so for Albert Queen, main character of the first story of this trilogy - hence the title of the entire book - who is a representative of the inhabitants of Raimina, the first human colony to venture on another planet after dropping an Earth deprived of its resources. Closed in his conservative approach aimed at the perpetration of human species on the planet, Queen sees strangers as a constant threat to the colony survival and tries to keep unchanged a precarious balance, destined to collapse. From the macroscopic fate of an entire planet, the second story - The Road - carries the reader into the micro-world of an unnamed character: his ego is imprisoned in a ruinous social, private and working condition, seemingly immutable. This is represented by a monotonous and endless road, with no exit or entrance ramps, whom he drives during a common journey started as many other times in the morning to go from his place to the office. And again a stalemate is the starting point of the plot involving the character of the third - and last - story of the book, "A new Pope": ex-executive consultant and wealthy heir, Antonio Scossa has apparently solved all the problems in his life. In his gilded cage, a handicraft shop where he can express his art and make his works without worrying about money, he dedicates his time to hobbies and family, yet being accompanied by a sense of loneliness and restlessness. What might he want more from a life which gave everything to him? The lives of the three characters will be actually shaken by unforeseeable, surreal and rationally unimaginable events, occurring under the guise of a female figure who pushes them toward a change in a wider perspective and to redesign their destinies by abandoning their ego, loneliness and isolation wherein they had taken shelter, to embrace the other, instead.
