History of the university founded in Lampeter as St David's College in 1822, written by its former Principal. The book tells the story of the oldest degree-conferring institution in Wales, and of a minor 'academic war' - mercifully bloodless, and not strictly academic, as opposing parties were motivated mainly by religious, political and nationalistic prejudices - when St David's College was refused membership of the federal University of Wales, founded in 1893. It gives an account of the college's struggle for survival 1945-1960, and of how, generously helped by University College, Cardiff, it eventually won Treasury grant-aid, and then full constituent membership of the University of Wales. First published as a hardback in 1980, this volume has been out of print for many years. Published in paperback for the first time to coincide with the campaign to save undergraduate teaching at the Lampeter campus, which is currently under threat.
