Gentry and Tenants. Poor girl's father is trampled to death by a horse ridden by the headstrong son of the local Squire. The son, Maxwell Thurlow, is fleeing the Country after shooting a cuckolded husband in a duel. Max's father, Mr Thurlow, takes orphaned Morwenna into his home to be educated and to live as a companion to his daughter, Jessica. This move does not please cold, fussy Mrs Thurlow. She barely tolerates Morwenna's presence in her home and attempts to find Morwenna employment elsewhere. Maxwell, eventually returns with a beautiful but ailing fiancee. Due to the fiancee's ill health and bedridden state, Maxwell and Morwenna become friends and close companions. Too close. There is a good deal of class conflict in this romance. Morwenna is expected to know her place and to stay there. How Morwenna manages to prosper, find contentment, family and love makes for an interesting story.
