This written history cites five iconic women responsible for the success of SDSU Mortar Board. They are Mary McMullen, the prescient woman who initiated the San Diego State College Cap and Gown chapter; Mary Mendenhall, whose goal of Mortar Board inclusion was unyielding; Dr. Margery B. Warmer, on whose watch both Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board were brought to the campus; Dr. Sue W. Earnest, the 1928 graduate of State, and the constant champion of her school until her death in 2007 at the age of 100; and Dr. Jane K. Smith, the "glue" that has held together and ensured prosperity of the chapter since 1985.
