I watched the Criterion version. Still had to adjust the aspect to 4:3.
The subtitles are in English, and they even show the Spanish subtitles instead of just saying “Speaking Spanish.”
Adapted by Jules Furthman from the play “Amy Jolly” by Benno Vigny.
The opening music almost makes you think of the Wolfman. But soon the background music settles down, and even though it can be considered a character in this movie does not overwhelm the other characters. It is also not too loud for conversations.
All the main characters meet and explain themselves at the beginning.
So, we have a relationship between Légionnaire Tom Brown (Gary Cooper) and nightclub singer Mademoiselle Amy Jolly (Marlene Dietrich). Where does this lead us, or is that it?
The brilliant ending MAKES the movie. Without it, it would probably have been an enjoyably moody but average 1930s flick.
