Morningside Heights: New York Stories I couldn't put this book down! It is a powerful read filled with poetic language that makes the images of places vivid. There is also a skillful meshing of literary references with description. You get a close-up view of the main character's thinking and feeling as he moves from school drop-out to brilliant student and teacher. I will especially remember the way relationships with other people were described. I wished there were more to read at the end.
First readings

As Joe's former Principal and also as an ex-English teacher, this was my first response to Joe re:Morningside Heights. Duane Yee After getting thru the 1st couple of stories, I read the back cover reviews to see who said what about the book. They've done it justice. As for me, I'm loving it. Your voice rings true. Your messages are clear because you are you and you don't set out to CREATE a message. That's the most effective kind, in my estimate. Enough for now. Just had to let you know my initial response before my ancient mind moves on to something else.
Morningside Heights - A Great Read

A Midwesterner the past twenty-five years, I graduated from both CCNY and Columbia and know Morningside Heights well. Tsujimoto captured the essence of this great neighborhood completely and was able to relate one fascinating story after another. I had planned to snack on and savor one or two stories at a time, but instead devoured the book in one Saturday feast. From laugh-out-loud anecdotes to stories that tugged on your heart strings, the book leaves you waiting for the sequel with the rest of Tsujimoto's experiences. John Muller-Thym Hudson, Ohio

Each story catapulted me into the next one in this can't-put-down collection. I was in New York, hearing the sounds, smelling the smells, dodging the crowds, watching a group of teenagers wending their way to maturity! Joe brought me right into the middle of everything. I also was (really!) in Hawaii, chortling over descriptions of colleagues and even standing in line in the school's cafeteria. If I weren't retired, MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS would surely be on my list of required readings for my classes. Sylvia Wilmeth (former colleague and neighbor of Joe and Sharon Tsujimoto)
Tales of Kenji

A semi-autobiographical work by a New York born and bred Japanese American now living in Hawaii, Morningside Heights is an illuminating look at life; so colorful and descriptive I felt I needed to be wearing sunglasses so as not to sear my retinas ... so intense and passionate; the author breathes life into his words, so much so that I felt I could see the characters and stories unfold as clearly as viewing a movie. I just wish it were more closely focused or longer ...
