Come along on a journey through the beautiful, historic lighthouses of the State of Michigan. The tour begins in the author's hometown of Detroit, Michigan with the William Livingstone Memorial Light located on the eastern edge of Belle Isle (an island park located in the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the prolific landscape architect who, along with his partner Calvert Vaux, also designed Central Park in New York City) and continues along the shores of Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Superior and Lake Erie. Interspersed throughout are the author's recollections of the cities, towns, people, and other Michigan landmarks she encountered along the way (with one spectacular detour to Duluth, Minnesota to visit one of the world's most photographed lighthouses). Included are the author's photographs gathered over a fifteen-year period.Michigan has over a hundred existing lighthouses, more than any other state. Some are not operational, but you can climb the stairs and experience amazing views from many of the towers or catwalks. The variety of style, color, location and use (a few have been used as primary residences) make the journey fascinating and just plain fun. From the castle-like red-roofed Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse near the foot of the Mackinac Bridge to the Robert H. Manning Memorial Lighthouse in Empire, Michigan. The Manning Memorial was never used as a working lighthouse, having been erected in the 1990s to honor of this lifelong Empire resident. Come along and marvel at the beauty of the State of Michigan.
