"It's a place where fishermen fish for keeps and quahoggers dig like they're searching for gold. Islanders wave and greet one another. Always. I'm amazed at how mainlanders can be the only two people in a small waiting room and never say hello or make eye contact. How sad. But not on the island. When you arrive there, you are said to be on island time, meaning there is none. It's where I learned to write. It's where I learned to love. It's where I learned to live, and it's where I learned to die."
