While the jokes in this book are pretty good, a large number are retreads of one form or another. There is the "see food diet", "I was a young fellow when this speech started" and a whole series of "bad wife" jokes. They cover the usual topics of bad cooking, bad cleaning and excessive spending. There is also a whole list of "Smogarian" jokes, which in less politically correct times were Polish or Bohemian jokes. My favorite joke in the book is, "Etiquette is learning to yawn with your mouth shut." I have read a large number of joke books and there seems to be a great deal of reused material in them. Sometimes, it makes me wonder if there aren't a finite number of jokes and what we read are just slight modifications of the core set. After all, in how many ways can a wife damage dinner, spend money or gossip? Furthermore, how many stupid things can a member of a dumb ethnic group do?
