John Meade Falkner was born in Wiltshire in 1858, the son of a clergyman. He was educated at Marlborough and Hertford College, Oxford. After Oxford, he went to Newcastle as tutor to the family of Sir Andrew Noble, the vice-chairman of Armstrong's of Newcastle, one of the largest arms manufacturers in the world. In 1885 he was offered a post in the firm.
