SIMPLE PLEASURES - GREAT REWARDS

"Anyone can go sunbathing - and often we do - but what I like best at the beach is moon bathing." This is the opening line of a wonderful little book `Moonbathing' by Liz Rosenberg and illustrated by Stephen Lambert. This work was published in 1996 and despite the passage of thirteen years, has lost none of its charm. A little girl is joined by her older cousin and they visit a familiar beach; a beach they have visited many times during the day, but now it is night. What a delightful journey of discover these two you people have. The blinking on and off of a lighthouse seen through the gloom of darkness and fog, the white-topped foaming waves has they hit the land seen by moonlight, shadows of pebbles, seaweed, trees, rocks, flotsam washed upon the beach and the chance to find buried pirate treasure. What more could a child want? Simple pleasures, pleasures where the imagination is allowed to run playfully, are the best pleasures of all you know. The author has ended the book with a note to the adult to read to the child of what they might find on a beach shown only by moonlight. From driftwood to seals to seashells and waves; all is addressed to enliven the story even more. The art work in this particular book is quite quaint while at the same time mellow and stunning. All is a darkish soft blur which sets the mood for the story perfectly. The text and illustrations go together perfectly. The story is told in first person by the little girl and through her eyes we capture the wonder of this entire adventure. I might suggest, if you have not already done so, to take your child or grandchild on a moonlight walk, either through the woods, down a country road, by a pond or through a field. All is different and it is a thrilling walk for the little one. This is a wonderful bedtime read for the little ones and is the type of work that can be read many times to the child without driving the adult up the wall with boredom. I do highly recommend this one and if you can find a copy of this one before it is lost, grab it. It will be an additional welcome to your child's library. Don Blankenship The Ozarks
