The Monk Parakeet, also known as the Quaker Parrot, is a small, bright green parrot native to South America but found in feral populations worldwide. They are about 11-12 inches long, predominantly green with a greyish-white face and chest, and have a strong, orange beak. Highly social, they live in noisy flocks and are unique for building large, communal stick nests on trees or structures like utility poles. Adaptable to various environments, they thrive in urban areas, farmlands, and savannas. Their diet includes seeds, fruits, berries, and nuts. In the wild, they live about 15-20 years, while in captivity, they can live up to 25-30 years. They are popular pets due to their intelligence and ability to mimic speech but require significant social interaction and mental stimulation. Despite being listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, they are considered invasive in some regions.
