After 70+ years under the USSR's domination, Mongolia could plot its future. Their concrete industry was primitive, and they wanted to improve it ( Luke's area). We were invited to Mongolia to help start a concrete conference where people could learn from each other and the guest speakers about improving their concrete. When we first went there, they had no batch plants or admixtures in the concrete. Fifteen years later, they have modern batch plants and routinely use admixtures. Rapid advancements bring challenges as they learn to make and handle quality concrete. Their grade school education was rote and lectures, and they were interested in hands-on learning ( Billie's area). Billie taught students and teachers the hands-on method using the floating concrete kit. Later, both Billie and Luke worked with the engineering students using the hands-on method to make concrete pins and necklaces for cancer and hospice patients. This learning process of "learning by doing" and using their newfound engineering skills for charity projects was a new concept for these students. This booklet provides insight into some of the changes we saw as Mongolia faced change. During our 15+ trips to Mongolia, we saw changes in religion, grade school education, engineering education, and concrete. Mongolians are friendly people who welcome visitors and people who want to help them improve. So join us as you learn more about Mongolia, and maybe you will want to put it on your bucket list and visit the " Land of the Blue Skies."
