george was and still is on point on this issue

I bought this book in 1996 when it came out. I also heard him discuss this book during a lecture in Harlem, N.Y. George said many things that make Black women and men uncomfortable. He also tackles issues that many other writers and "relationship experts" don't touch. He talks about the impact of Black women on the drug trade; how Black women pick men who make good boyfriends and bad husbands. He talks how the current trend of single parenting in the African-American community in many cases is a matter of choice. He also talks about some of the mistakes made by Black men to define Black manhood. George also talks about how dating patterns are formed in the teenage years and gives a interesting perspective on Terry McMillan's waiting to exhale. This book is as relevant in 2008 as it was in 1996.

Balance has been restored

As a blackman all I ever hear is how the black man is at fault for this and at fault for that while the black woman is running around believing her stuff don't stink. The black man and woman are out of balance. We both need to become who we once were as blackmen and women under the identity of our culture. If women want to know why men are the way they are and how we feel about them then get the book. Medicine isn't suppose to taste good its suppose to heal. With the million man march brothas have admitted we have fallen short. Sistas you need to get on board. Waiting to exhale is not reality.Bro. Subira has the courage to say what black men have wanted to say for a long time and he says it like a man. 99.99% of the black media caters to black woman so the black man is unheard. Feminist black women try to minimalize this book by saying its female bashing but its not. He starts by saying to the blackman of america that we are the only men on earth that did not rise up to kill our enemy. In turn that has dealt a mighty blow to our manhood. The new battle field is the business arena and we need to get our stuff together if we expect our woman to follow us and take us back as the head of the family.

Powerfully true and insightful. This book is a must read !

Don't let the title fool you. This book puts takes a comprehensive look at relationships, and a lot of what is stated in this book is also applicable to White people and their relationships. Riddled with truth, this one book is a masterpiece of how our history, childhood, educational institutions and society play a significant role in how we view relationships and money. The author raises some very good points about how money impacts relationships. A significant number of Black Women are not going to like this book. The author asks very real world questions, "Do all Black Women desereve good Black Men?" He also takes an interesting look at the four principal characters who comprise the crux of Terry McMillians "Waiting To Exhale". His piece is called "Terry's Girlfriends" and is a must read. Although you can feel the authors anger when he poses such questions, wade through this anger and internalize his concepts. This is not a women bashing book (althought it may come across as such). Putting personal egos aside, does he tackle and wrestle with the truth? In my opinion, the answer is yes. The last chapter of this book suggests possible solutions to the dilemma that faces Black people. After having read John Grays' "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" and Harville Hendrix "Getting The Love You Want", this book beats those other two hands down.
