A hardback edition of the popular MoMA Artist Series, with larger reproductions of Monet's classic artworks. In 1955 The Museum of Modern Art became the first public collection in the United States to acquire one of Claude Monet's large-scale paintings of his Japanese-style pond and garden in Giverny, France. Today, works from this same series are among the most beloved pieces in the Museum's collection. These include the mural-sized triptych Water Lilies (1914-26) and a single panel painting, Water Lilies (1914-26), as well as The Japanese Footbridge (c. 1920-22) and Agapanthus (1914-26), depicting the majestic plants in the pond's vicinity. This lively volume by Ann Temkin, the Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA, recounts the history of Monet's Water Lilies at the Museum - including the destruction of two works in a fire in 1958 - and underscores the paintings' resonance with the art and artists of the last half-century.

Monet; Waterlillies"
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
There are so many books in publication about Monet's art. I have never viewed a book on Monet with such verve. I have finally found the THE BOOK on Monet's waterlillies for which he is so famous. The viewer is almost taken to the museum to view these magic images. Fold outs, double fold outs with waterlillies stretching across a panarama. One is also invited to see the paintings in progress. As an artist it was such a treat to see the innerworkings of Monet's artistic prolific output. He never wavers in his depiction of the waterlillies. And what astounded me was the detail and the ambiance of colors used together that one would never think of using to create such beauty. These large horizontal oils demand the viewer stand back and then move up close and study what you cannot detect at a distance. He was before his time and he ushered in the Impressionists. The perfect leader for this group of painters. The book I purchased is horizontal and huge and at the greatest price spoke 'round the world. It doesn't get much better than this , folks. I have a whole new respect and love of this genius. Even if you are not a Monet fan, this book is essential for an art book library.
Amazing pictures!

I love this book! Monet is one of my favorite artist's and I especially love his Water Lily pictures. The contrasting colors are so beautiful! His art work always gives me a feeling of peace and serenity. Monet is an artist that you don't have to understand the painting but just be able to enjoy all the colors and life that are in them.
